OUTDOOR WALKING THERAPY

Taking therapy outdoors has the potential to offer a wide range of benefits for those who are able and who are drawn to it.

For some, the intensity of face-to-face counselling is difficult, whereas companionable walking makes opening up easier. For others, nature itself is the healer. Mental health charity Mind carried out extensive research a few years ago, which showed that walking in the countryside could help reduce depression and anxiety. In their survey, they reported that 71% of respondents felt decreased depression and less tense after a “green” walk, while 90% felt their self-esteem increase after a country walk.

Frequently asked questions

What is outdoor walking therapy?

It is simply us walking and talking outside, without the constraint of a room and chairs.

Where will we walk?

I live in a peaceful countryside location near New Alresford in Hampshire, near lots of foot paths. I also do a lot of walking in and around Winchester. I often see deer, rabbits, hares and birds of prey (you can see some local friends in this photo!)

If you have your own preferred place and route, I can come to you (length of my journey allowing). We will agree this in advance.

Do I need to be a fast walker?

Absolutely not! You will set the pace - a meander is great with me, as is a stroll or a stomp! It is important you feel safe and confident on your feet. We can talk about the type of path you are confident on in advance.

Do we go out all weather?

I am happy to go out in any weather as long as it is safe to do so. Weather can provide us with great metaphors to work with! Where you would rather not go out, we can instead hold the session online.
